I know there are a ton of guitar players on here, so I figure it can't hurt to ask if anyone has some insight on what is a good acoustic or acoustic-electric guitar. I have never played before. I'd like to keep it under $400, the less expensive the better, but I would rather have a real instrument and not a toy. I have been reading a lot of reviews online, but still trying to figure it out.

I scored an Axl chinese acoustic with pickups for $300 ozzie and it sounds nice to me if some one who isnt a drummer plays it.

there are so many nice acoustics out there the question becomes one of price verses value and sound quality verses playing ability.

I am unable to comment on the last criteria

You need to spend more money if you want a really good one. Yamaha makes good inexpensive ones.

Yamaha makes the best low end acoustics IMO. Stays in tune, low action - I forget the model # I had but it's usually just 100 bucks used in the local shop. Stay away from epiphone, never a good experience with that company and their product.

Try and get a second hand Lowden or Martin.

Don't start with an acoustic then. The action (how far you have to press the strings down) is higher and the strings are thicker/tauter. This all means blisters and discouragement.

I'd go for a cheap electric. Way easier to play, and you can always move on to acoustic once you have built up the muscles and callouses.

I've had a few cheap Epiphones that were just fine. They make some cool Les Pauls, SG's and Thunders-style LP Juniors that are cool and cheap. I've had all of these and was always happy.

Just don't get a Strat!!!!!!!!!

There aren't any on epay now, but watch for a Takamine F340 from the 70s (they're always avail). They were a cheaper take on the Martins- the F340 is a copy of the D18- a smaller easy to play acoustic. They're in your price range and good players.
