Check out pawn shops in your area, go play their guitars, be a pain in the ass, make some noise, they will be tolerant... and it is a great place to figure out what you want. The price at a pawn shop may or may not be a great deal... research closed item prices on ebay. And haggle.

^^THAT

I had an old 74 Alvarez (kinda scratched and scarred) from a pawn shop in the 80s, but played and sounded great, action was perfect, stayed in tune, could take a beating, etc. Loved that guitar. Paid around $100 for it.
Had it for over 20yrs, until a smacked-out friend stole it for his candy.

Doubt you'll find something good for that price nowadays, im currently looking too. I'd never buy a acoustic without playing it.

I was/still am the same way. Except with Larrivee's. I've played at least a hundred of them by now and they blow me away every time.

Taylor makes some of the best acoustics out there. They have a model called the "Big Baby". It is their beginner model. I learned on that one. It is easy to play & sounds real good.

You can even get a used one off of ebay for cheaper, but I'd watch out buying a guitar off of ebay.

Good luck. Guitar playing is great.

I went to the guitar shop today. I think I may have to up my ante a little bit.

The Martin OMC1e, I think that was the model #, looks nice. Or one of the lower end Taylor guitars. So now I'm looking at more around 5-7 hundred

These guys are all gear fags.

Take $200 to guitar center and you're set.

For a beginner I would highly recommend nylon string vs. steel string. If you plan on playing everyday your prissy little un-callused fingers aren't going to last more than 10 or 15 minutes a day on steel strings; although the neck will likely be bigger on a nylon you can tune a half step down slightly relieving the tension and you can play for hours, and hours.

Then when you get your first electric it will feel like butter

I still say try the Big Baby if you're dead set on an acoustic.

If you wanna learn a little better, go w/ what someone above said & get an electric. You can get a fender type guitar for pretty cheap & it'll be decent enough quality to learn on.

Don't dunp 700 bucks on a guitar if you don't yet know that you'll really dig it & wanna continue playing.

+1 on the nylon strings, but put them on a regular acoustic. Those classical necks are a killer for a beginner.

Or have them put on set of light strings and adjust (setup) the guitar accordingly n

I agree with those recommending nylon. Get a beater, learn to tune it and have someone who plays show you the basics. Play it for a while and see if you like it. There's a chance after the first little while it won't get played again.
