if you really want to learn easier get a cheap electric guitar and put nylon strings on it.
It will sound awful but will be easy to play, and really most beginners sound awful so no one will really notice until you have managed smoke on the water the first time... |

Won't play thru an amp though...pickups need metal strings or at least metal wound strings. |

Nylon strings on a steel string, and nylon strings on an electric ?
I'm all for being experimental but these are new ones on me.
Let me try to make this as logical as possible.
If you were to survey thousands of guitarist's they would all have a cheap nylon string classical, aka a beach guitar that you can throw in the car without a case and not worry about it getting a little banged up. Not only are these types of guitars typically very durable but it's kind of a rite of passage, like learning how to surf on a long board before trying a 5"8 thruster.
If you're just learning then you have no idea what kind of guitar you like yet,
so you just need something you can learn the basics on, kinda like when you lost your V card |

I agree to have a beach/camping guitar, but I'm not sure about the nylon string/classical guitar theory. Could always throw on some flatwounds but nothing wrong with cutting up fingers on some fresh steel strings. Guess depends what he wants to play. |

Illegal.

What are "these days"? I have a 2002 Martin D-15 that sounds and plays amazing. And was a reasonable price.
They've all slid in the last 10 years—Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Fender, Takamini... you name it. Wood isn't as good, craftmenship is not as good and the sound suffers as a result.
I was at L&M last week and tried just about every brand they had (some decent Gibsons and Martins too) but when I got to the Larrivée's it was not even fucking close. Those guitars sound so fucking good you don't want to play anything else—which really pisses me off because I want a new acoustic and can't afford a Larrivée. |

I agree, most have a dead sound until you really step up with the dollar- was just out playing through a bunch - the only truly great sounding Martin was the Eric Clapton $3K- pretty killer though. Also shocked how laminated necks and bodies are heading up in price...like it's the norm.
I've taken notice of the Larivees and will pay more attention when they appear. |

its been awhile as I mentioned earlier but was shocked at how good the entry level martins sounded (when I was looking like 5 years ago)
I would put those up against the $2-3K Gibsons anyday |

I got a used Alvarez AD-70S for $200. Probably a beater to you guys, but I'm sure it'll be just fine for me. |
