Admittedly I haven't used rails since the 80's so I'm a tad behind on the modern rail trends. While doing some research I noticed that sex bolts seem to be a thing of the distant past and now wood screws are the norm.
When did that happen? Seems like sex bolts would work better but I'm not an expert by any means. Didn't using wood screws used to void warranties, per those old cards?
Maybe not everyone has access to power tools, so using woodscrews would allow for more users?
This is not a pressing issue, just a curiosity. Thanks for any insight.

Personally I hate wood screws. I still use t-nuts/rat nuts if I can find them. It's a lot more work to drill a deck out, but worth it I think.
T-nuts phased out in the early 90's if I remember right. When Planet Earth and World, New Deal started making rails, they all had wood screws packed with them. |

I feel that Rat Nuts/Sex Bolts are a superior system, but wood screws are cheaper and simpler.
I imagine that's the driving force behind all rails having wood screws these days. |

Go to Ace or another hardware store that has a good selection of nuts, bolts and screws. If they are any good they should have sex bolts in stock. You can do the same with truck mounting hardware too at a fraction of the cost of name brand skate hardware. Anyway, be sure to measure the thickness of your deck and the size of the holes in your rails and purchase sex bolts accordingly.
If you can't find them at local hardware stores there are plenty of nut and bolt suppliers online that sell in small quantities. Or you could spend $15 or so for OG Rat Nuts on eBay.
Hope this helps. |

When I worked for Borgy in the late 80s I used to cut and package his rails.
He had an extruded rail that only worked with a sex nut system.
He got the idea from the automotive industry door trim system.
You would put your sex nuts in the board and slide the rail through the T section, then tighten up the nuts.
Great idea.....Did any other rails do this?
Rails went out the window once minimal lightweight was king.
These rails are massive.....I cut them for my mike smith long.

T-bars! Haven't seen that rail style in forever. Cool!
I'm generallt go for Robertson woodscrews with a dab of white glue though I have a bunch of rat nuts somewhere. |

I always had a hard time finding them local, Ace, local hardware stores, etc.
I finally found them in bulk from McMaster Carr.
They call them "Binding Posts".
And fuck wood screws. |
