I lost my Mom a couple weeks back and the best memory I had was when she bought me an Alva board for x-mas.

I went through a number of plastic and fiberglass decks early on—the the trucks and wheels off a broken one and made a 38" coffin shaped deck to put them on out of super hard rock maple plywood. Not the best deck but possible the first coffin shaped longboard and it was tough as fuck!

I had a Sims woodkick to—that was just before decks started getting bigger and I didn't like the thick tail on.

So my mom went to the first real skate shop in Calgary to get me what I wanted: and 8" Alva deck with Tracker Full Tracks and flat back Sims Snakes which were all the latest raddest thing in the skate mags.

Dude at the shop talked her into getting something similar and newer—stuff that had just come into the shop that morning.

That x-mass I opened the box to find a 10" Alva tri-logo, Tracker Ex-Tracks and Sims conical snakes with NMB bearings, z-flex rails and a couple stickers.

I was fully blown away! This stuff had not even been in the magazines yet!! My crew was totally blown away as well—none had seen any of this newer, bigger, better, faster stuff, not even in pictures.

I'll never forget opening that box and riding what was the best skate I had so far.

She also bought me my first set of Indys and Blackhart wheels when they finally arrived on the market a few years later.

Thanks Mom. I'll never forget. Miss you.
