Shipping Decks

Curious as to the experiences others have having decks shipped from the USA to Canada. When I buy from a retail place like (oldschoolskates,CCS,etc) or a distributor I get jammed up for the duty which is like 15% on top of the already sketchy 30% exchange rate. This basically adds 45% to the cost of anything I buy from the south.

I've had private sellers ship me decks I bought and they stated on the shipping invoice that they were used skate decks being shipped as a gift to a friend and this didn't cause me to have to pay duty/taxes (and is completely legit because the boards bought pribately were already purchased before thus the taxed would have been paid at the original purchase time)

Anyone else had similiar experiences getting stuff shipped across the border and not getting hit up with the whole duty/taxes shit?

shipping to england has the same deal with duty/taxes.

that is why I only sell "really used" decks. with no value. that are really old. with a scratch on them. that are not new. "happy birthday dude, here is a sample, can you send me $5 ASAP, sorry for that."

I always ask the sender to do a few things.

Ship via US Postal Service (UPS, FedEx and all those bitches will toss you for what they call a "border fee". I never get dinged for it when it's shipped USPS)

Mark the value as $20 or less This is easy to do. Customs works up how much dity must be paid by looking at how much the item is worth. It seems that items under $20 are duty exempt.

Mark as a gift or sample Some companies might not be willing to do it, but some will. It always helps.

Since I envoked these guidelines, I've never had to pay extra in shipping (except that time that Gusto sent me a shirt and marked it $5 and Customs took it as "55". The moral is: Senders should write ledgibly )

I dont know whats up w Canada, but the other day I asked a seller how much for shipping on a popsicle. $27.00 from Canada to upstate NY.
No bid for that deck.

Here's another Canada Post oddity:

It costs me more to ship a Tshirt in Canada than it does to the US. How that makes any sense is beyond me.

Same with a 12" Records....it cost under $5 to ship one to the States from canada...but about $8 within Canada....

I bought a deck on ebay and its time to pay... the seller lives in the UK and he quoted me a price of 37.77 pounds ($70.00) to ship ..sounds high

I live in Ireland which is approx 100Km from the UK across the Irish sea and it is 18stg which is $32, I was quoted 16stg $28 to ship a pair of $50 jeans from route one in the UK !
