DO get something that you know YOU like and see yourself liking forever (even if you don't love it the same way you do now, at least you will enjoy having it).
DON'T let anyone else tell you what to get or what not to get or where to get it. If you want Ace Freely on you forehead, go for it!
DO get to know the person that will be tattooing you. Depending on the size of the piece or your ability to get addicted, you may be spending a lot of time half naked with this person. You better be comfortable with him/her.
DON'T be afraid to ask questions. DON'T assume they are professional and sterile. If they are legit, they will have no problem showing you how they use disposable stuff and how they clean the re-usable. You don't have to know the science of sanitation, but if they are pulling needles out of a jar of jewelry cleaning solution, kindly say "thanks for your time" and run like hell.
DON'T be fooled by big, colorful, pretty looking tattoos in a portfolio. Look closely at line quality by ignoring the "picture" and looking at specific lines and shading in small areas.
DO pay top dollar. Don't be ripped off, but long waiting lists, and high $$ hourly rates are typically worth the investment. Sometimes you can get lucky with a new guy getting experience, but a proven master will charge accordingly. $200 per hour is not unheard of.
DO enjoy the process, it's fun and addicting. DO get addicted! |
