Randy was a great player with horrible noisy tone.
I prefer Jake too—especially in Badlands.

Funny, it wasn't until recently that I noticed he was part Asian—not that that matters. |

Most of his tone/noise issues were all the pedals he used—especially distortion pedals into a distorted amp. |

It's called Metal folks!!!
I would give anything to have experienced Randy live,
not to mention hear what he would have done with one or two more years of playing experience and technologie backing him.
Blizzard was released in 1980 and alot of the tracks on Diary were written prior to Blizzard.
So considering what he was doing prior to the 80's Metal scene is pretty fucking amazing.
Of course Jake E. and Zack are great but alot of the music that Ozzy put out in the 80's was totaly disposable in comparison to what he did with Randy... I remember watching an interview with Ozzy where he was watching some of his 80's videos and he just shut the tv off, so I'm pretty sure he felt the same way. |

Plenty of metal players whose tone isn't a shitshow of noise. Even death metal guys. |

Well regarding that live recording of Crazy Train, it sounds fucking badass to me.
Though I'm sure that the equipment used to record it wasn't great compared to todays standards it's sounds pretty great to my ears.
I thinks it's similar to Hendrix, where his gear maybe wasn't quite as advanced as he was,
or maybe me and tens of millions of Randy fans are completely clueless..... I can accept that.. |

Crazy train was a train wreck of noise. Great playing, but that MXR into a distorted amp wad god awful—and you know they tried to clean that up. Of all of Randy's recordings, Crazy Train was the noisiest—its too bad thye didn't have a good engineer on that record, they could turned something outstandly rad, despite the noise, into something fucking amazing.
Hendrix tone was fucking rad—Fender amps, stock strat with balanced string gauges. His octavia and wah added some noise, the fuzz was intentional, but overall his tone was way cleaner than Randy's.
When you distort and already distorted amp with a solid state pedal, it will sound like a noisy mess. |
