I'm about to start working on some posters for a buddy of mine, he's providing illustrations in black, scanned at a high resolution, 1200 dpi, you can always make it small but can't make it bigger
so, does anyone have any suggestions on printing films for these?
i'm using inkjet films on a canon I9900, with my own graphics i usually run everything out of illustrator and just run my color separations from layers seeing as how they're all vector graphics.
how could i run these scans from photoshop with the black being VERY black. i was thinking of just boosting the contrast so that the black comes out very black.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

If you're trying to print BLLAAAACK BLACK BLACK films on an inkjet, you're more than likely going to need some sort of print controller (RIP or Fiery unit) between your computer and your printer. It will allow you to control the amount of ink output. That's how I've seen it done in the past. Just set it for the max output.
I don't have a lot of experience with it, as I print using a medium format laserjet to vellum, but I know people who use the inkjet method. |

take each black layer and make it into a seperate file...
convert each file into a 50% threshold bitmap and save as a bitmap
you can than "place" each file into a new illustrator document
and output the fils as well
you can assign the .bmp files specific spot colors in AI. |

you can get an agfa image setter for next to nothing right now.
you need a good rip to run it as well as some adobe skills. |

i use this printer
epson 1400
and R-FILM™ 13"x100' Roll WaterProof Positive Film
prints solid black
you can also get your layer and do a color overlay with black to get the darkest black on there |

i ended up doubling up the films to get a dense black, still not BLACK BLACK but dark enough to expose the screen.
using qtx and 3 - 20 watt unfiltered black lights i had about an hour exposure time, seems like a lot for time but i think its because of the black in the film.
worked out pretty well though. |

You could also make each into a "rich black" 100K, 30C, 30M, 30Y. This may have given you the density you needed.
