Is this guy at a shop, or is he doing it out of his house? Do you like his previous work?
Personally, I wouldn't do it. |

Depends how particular you are.
The fact that you are asking means you shouldn't do it. |

Its your skin for life, so no. Get in good with an artist. Let him use his or her creative expression, and they may give you a discount. But, I would rather save up and pay someone for great work. Just my 2 cents. |

Not only do you run the risk of getting a crappy tattoo,H.I.V.,Hepatitis and other nasty cooties are a risk factor as well.
Hunting for bargains or hook ups when getting tattoos is a really bad idea.
Not going to tell you what you should do,either way.
But just make sure you have all this put into consideration, that i will say. |

I have lots of stuff by apprentices/newbies, but they were all properly supervised in a shop environment.
Some of the work is a little dodgy, but they were made by my friends when they were just starting out, so I'm proud to have helped them on their way and I wouldn't have them fixed or covered for the world.
I've got quite a bit of coverage though, so the crappy bits don't really show amongst the good stuff. |

My buddy got some stuff done at a good shop by an a "green-artist" and it looks pretty good. I think it sort of depends on the shop, and how well you know 'em. I don't think that the shop owner would let a guy work on someone he's friends with.
Buyer beware. |
