I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Shakeys Pizza..
As a kid.. I loved the automatic player piano. The endless pitchers of sugar (oops I mean root beer) did not hurt.. hahahaha
Ours was in La Crescenta on Foothill. |

Masonic.
So tasty!!! However, my judgement is likely clouded by the fact that I have never eaten there while sober OR befor 2 or 3 am. Any plate of eggs benedict is like heaven in that condition.
Funny thing is I lived upstairs from this greasy spoon in LBC, and it had the exact same floorplan as the SF Penny. Like they bough the same set of plans in 1962 or whatever. It really fucked with my head to eat in there!!!! |

Crucial element of the authentic 80's pizza "parlor" experience. Along with Duck Hunt projected on the wall, and lighting dimmed down to the "molester's paradise" setting. |

I don't think mine had the Duck Hunt (early 70s), but it was creepy dim with an auto pipe organ and sawdust on the floor.
Fuck, those were the days. Big ass greasy pepperoni pizza and a big red plastic cup of root beer. Someone needs to bring back the creepy pizza parlor.
Shakey's is still around, but the creep factor is gone.
How about Pioneer Chicken? |

I think they were bought out by Popeye's.
Numero Uno pizza is one that no longer seems to be around.
I can't really think of any other defunct restaurant chains, but ones that are coming back:
Bob's Big Boy
Farrell's Ice Cream |

Pizzeria Uno? That was good shit.
Bob's is still around, with fewer locations. They kinda overextended themselves and had to cut back.
Farrell's looks to have a couple locations, too. Get the FARRELL'S ZOO, dude!!!!!!!!!!!! (Up here it was called the Earthquake).

I also miss the Old Fashioned Ice Cream place in the mall that sold dipped ice cream bars. I saw them at the OC Fair last summer, but haven't seen them in the mall in a long time. |

Hah! I worked at the Shakey's in Arcadia (Foothill between First and Second). It was great food and atmosphere....once.
My brother had worked there for 4 years, and it was great, but all the good Managers left by the time I started. Most aggregious violations of Labor Laws I ever witnessed. The best was when I had been on for 7 hours without a lunch, finally said "Fuck it", sat down and ordered my pie, and rested in the banquet room. 10 minutes later the Manager is yelling at me because the relief guy was late, and he was telling me it was my responsibility to get back and wash all of the pans that they just dumped from the kitchen (i.e. the entire day's worth).
Yeah, I told him I was done, and the following week quit, it just wasn't worth it. |
