greetings - its time again to honor another local hero doing it for all the right reasons. We give this offering up to thank this guy for what he did and continues to do with our local scene in CT
Tony DaSilva
This thread will be a sort of progression of the graphic and a bit of history of Tony and his impact on me
Round 2 we're down to
pay tribute to another local legend and so begins work on the latest and greatest bro model for our pal Tony DaSilva.
The year was 1990 and I was 13. A skatepark opened up and it was called The Playground. I had never been to a skatepark before, only seen them in Thrasher magazine, and was not ready for what was about to be the biggest impact on my skateboarding times.
The Playground was located about 45 minutes from my house but I do remember every time my dad drove my brother and I to it, it seemed like it was in another state. The car ride always seemed to take forever , but it gave us enough time to wonder what it would be like the first time and for future visits we could plan out what we were gonna skate.
I remember the first time I walked into the place. It was located in an industrial park off of the main highway running through CT. It was nothing to look at from the outside - the only way of knowing which door lead to the park was by looking for the many stickers covering said door and perhaps a few cars outside with the same skate decorations.
Opening the door and walking into a funky little entrance room - to the right a mini skateshop with 2 clothing racks and decks on the wall...damn look at that black dip Tony Hawk Claw deck... - to the left was the service counter where entrance as well as snacks could be purchased ( holy shit look at all the stickers on that microwave ) and Bruna was running what was, in my thoughts, the greatest skatepark CT has ever had.
Bruna is Tony's mom and I always remember her having this classic look and style about her and thought it was rad that a kid's mom was running the show. My parents were supportive of skating, driving me around and buying me gear, but they never woulda run a private park in a million years!
After quickly paying Bruna and leaving this small entrance area through a plain wooden door that would open up into - what felt like - Paradise - our mind's were officially blown.
Being 13 years old and rather short - this wonderland seemed monstrous - a huge 10, maybe 12 ft vert ramp all along the entire right side of the warehouse - along the left... a 6 ft spine from heaven. Down the center was a concrete runway to a 4 ft quarter pipe against the back wall and tucked into the corner...a 3 ft micro mini where my tranny practice would begin!
This park was epic, or so I thought, until a few years later when it took over the second warehouse space and blew out the left wall to more than double its floor space! The early 90's brought about street skating in a big way and the park needed a state of the art street course, so one was built. The transition side of the park remained but i never went back to that side once the street course came about.
This park had attained an epic reputation and after many demos from touring pros such as Henry Sanchez, Guy Mariano , Rudy Johnson - Matt Hensley - Danny Way ...the list goes on forever - The Playground hosted a huge NSA contest ( remember those? )
My brother and I attended - were amazed by all the pro under 1 roof - Cards killed the place - Koston won street - saw Lance Conklin in his rookie year setting up his Budwieser graphic - Kendall - Knox - Mihalenko - just lots of autographs and the day closed with the Vert contest - epic day.
It was a killer park and Tony, being the owners son - was the local superstar - he was always humble and polite amongst an onslaught of prick kids ( shout out to Greco you fuckin ass )- I admired Tony and watched him grow up to go on to bigger things in skateboarding through the years.
Fast forward to today - he still skates - is a skate camp counselor helping the little ones hone their skills and embrace their passion to skate.
Here's to you Tony - thanks for being a swell guy and riding a skateboard.
here are the original PLAYGROUND logos/graphics for the park
stay tuned for Tony's bro model... |

Wouldn't this be more in the lines of a "press release", rather than a hot discussion?
I sure slob can clarify. |
