I'm tired of taping 2 transparencies together.

I need an awesome printer that wont require a RIP program. I could deal with toner enhancer if its a laser printer. I think I would prefer laser but I dunno, you tell me. I'm willing to spend around $600 if needed and guaranteed to have epic films.

What's a good choice?

Thanks!

we have a xante screen writer3.
it is postscript3 so all halftones / rip is in the printer.
it puts out up to 13 x 35 films.
perfect for board printing.
there is a toner density controller in the printer,
max it to 20, and films are super dense black.

i found it 5 or 6 years ago for 150.00.

before that we had a ricoh,
not sure of the model number,
it was around 600.00 brand new.

most are going to ink jet style films these days.
so i see the xante for sale used quite a bit.

bought a second one about 6 months ago for 500.00.
just for back up.

get one of those epson printers. they might cost about 5x what you want to spend, but from what i seen from my friend's shops is that they print out clean artwork for printing.

i have an image setter here. it sucks. it's about 20 feet long and needs fix and developer (photo developing chemicals). i want to smash it so bad.

I use the epson 3000, and I did buy a rip... one of the best purchases I've made

I used to use cheap HP oversized photo printers but they always cost me more in the long run

my costs on film are a little higher, but I save everything and we have art from 6 years ago that hasn't faded...

there is always ways to cut corners in printing, but you can buy cheap now, and buy again when you can afford quality or just save a little and buy right the first time.

Thanks for the input guys. I've already learned from past experience that you're much better off if you buy the good equipment up front.

I'm trying to save for a nice press. In the mean time, I need to get familiar with my UV exposure unit I just built. It works well but I can't hold detail like thin lines and halftones. I need a printer that will give me black black black with 1 film.

Going from hobby screen printer to custom screen printer is a big step and I don't want to dive in TOO deep just yet. Still, I know a good printer is very important. However I can't afford or justify buying a $1,000+ printer or Printer/RIP.

Do you think the Epson 1400 +RIP is a decent choice?

Any suggestions for the RIP software? Possibly a torrentable one for now? SoftRIP is expensive as hell!

Thanks!

if you have time to learn it

ghost rip is free

google it

also what emulsion are you using for your uv exposure unit
I know I have sucked in this forum this year

(losing your business of 7 years to an evil ex wife and starting again from the ground up is trying)

but I wil ltry to be more helpful

I am using a home made uv black light, and I am still getting 65 lpi in 25-35 seconds...

I found GhostRIP..
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/

I didn't install anything yet, I'll have to read about it first.

Maybe Jerboy can try it on his 1400 and see how it does. That would certainly help me in my decision.

Edit- Oh yeah! I just got a fresh tub of Ulano QX-1. I haven't tried it yet. It took me about 4 min to expose with speedball shit.

Also, sorry to hear about your business! From what I read around here you run a good show.

I tried ghost rip but I already had a rip so it was pointless...

I use spike ct-420d but they have discontinued it.
I used to use qx-1 but it took too long

I have tested chromablue with similar results to my current emulsion.

I actually think I printed for you back when I ran def-star...
it's a small web world

we are back full on.... but thanks for the kind words
