I just got back from skating my local bowl and bringing some smokie treats and beer money by for the Rideit crew.

We've had some bad weather days around here lately.

Everyone's trying to stay hydrated...

The guy's chain sawed a 2x4 into a large spike and were throwing it in competition to puncture a full beer can determining who would go pick up more booze. This went on for a long time...I guess it's not always about finishing first.

Mitch rolled over Tony's favorite cruiser with the bobcat...one of his kryptonics exploded down to the core with bearings...I think Tony was bummed.

Now that there was some flat, there was room for Thrasher photographer Joe Brook to try and squeeze some shots in with the crew before heading back to SF.

^ Tony Miorana from Anti Hero...ripping it!

^ Checking in on Joe's perfectly timed shot of Tony.

^ Pat from Atlanta with some sweetly stalled tail blocks on the angled extension.

^ Me, rolling around before the sun dropped.

^ and finally as a collector of "Betty" boards, I just happened to have this in my stash...figured I'd have Tony and the crew sign it in celebration of their DIY skate town Detroit chapter.

Fun night, my apologies for the iphone photography.

I dig this photo by Joe Brook. He caught the vibe of the neighborhood and the crew fit right in.

Back to front:

Patlanta,
Awesome, T Mo,
Snowman, Lauren Salt of the Earth,
& Albino

Lots of rain in D-town over the fourth of July week but that didn't stop the progress...here are a couple shots before the rest of the flat was poured.

Just under forty eight hours ago the crew only had a day and a half or less to skate their finished product before jumping planes or loading up a few tons of cement equipment to head south. They pushed themselves way beyond; probably taking a week off of their lives...ha. Some of the crew worked for free and most for very little. They worked hard and partied hard, they were a burly crew with tons of heart. I definitely realized how domestic I've become.
Two days ago was their only full day session before departing.
I wasn't able to make it but got a text message from Mitch that read like this:

First full day of skating. Everything went well. Only one hospital visit and only one local got beat up...by another local. Any questions?

Yes.
How old where the locals??
Who went to the hospital?

Snowman got a head scan. Serious head bump on a front side stall on his 1/4 pipe while holding a beer. Pretty scary, but I think he is fine, was released from
Hospital. _____ _______ beat up a dude being a jackass.

I'm glad snowman is going to be ok, he's a good dude. I guess he did a double head slap on "snowman’s" quarter while executing some sort of axle pivot while at the same time trying to take a slug of beer on a vert section. It sounds to have gotten scary with Tony Miorana and bros going into medic mode, doing everything to keep him awake till the ambulance arrived. He almost successfully killed himself with a severe concussion.
Of course none of these guys wear any protective gear.
Snoman made a comment at the hospital about thinking twice about helmets and that he had never been hit that hard in the head. It sounded like things got a bit emotional and was traumatic for all involved.
Hope the first day voodoo doesn't set the tone. Like I told Mitch, Hopefully this was just the culmination of five weeks of anticipation and tension. It would've been a huge bummer to have lost a crew member on the last day. It’s not supposed to be a memorial park.
On a positive note the crew left saying it was the best park they had ever constructed. Patlanta said it's one of the few times they've built a park where they had full skater discretion. They all showed a ton of pride. No engineers or city planners, just for skaters by skaters. Awesome!
Good vibes for this very publicly located privately owned DIY's survival!

So Mitch who owns the non profit that enabled Rideit says to Sno-man; "Hey have you met (Sno-man and I had already met three times) Erik, he basically taught me how to skateboard. We grew up together."
Sno-man says to me; "So Erik, we can thank you for this park then."
Yeah I cracked a smile, my petty ego got a kick out of it but it's so not true...
Wish I could've been more involved but life only let me slum it.

Hit it last night, still needs a drain cover, not officially opened but people are going.
