Sayreville will spend $60K on repairs to skate park
By GREG KENNELTY
Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE — After severe winter weather caused extensive damage to the skate park at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, the borough and its skateboarders are teaming up to restore and improve the popular park.

“We had a horrible winter, and the ground [underneath the bowl portion of the park] shifted and settled, which caused the concrete to warp and flake. As of right now, it is a liability to the town,” said longtime skateboarder Troy Jankowski, an advocate for the park.

“There is currently a fence around the bowl, which is more or less the shining star of the park. It has been up for about two months now. The rest of the park is open, but until we get the repairs done on the bowl, we are still missing a big part of the park. We want to get the repairs done rather quickly because it’s summer.”

During the June 23 Borough Council meeting, Jankowski and Mayor Kennedy O’Brien agreed a skate park committee should be formed in order to oversee the repairs to the park, located on Washington Road.

The committee consists of the mayor, Jankowski, local officials and skateboarders.

“The focus right now … is the repair and then maintenance of the skate park. They are skateboarders. This is what they enjoy, and I want them to focus on that right now,” O’Brien said.

“The repairs will cost the borough about $60,000. There are natural springs that run under Kennedy Park all throughout, and it was a terrible winter, which caused the ground to shift. The park has been a great asset to Sayreville, and we would like to see it fixed.”

The skate park committee will have its first meeting sometime in early July, a meeting that Jankowski said is very important.

“[At the June 23 meeting] I wanted to formally introduce myself and the skaters and re-form the committee for the first time in 12 years so we can express our concerns for the place,” he said.

“Contrary to popular belief, they are not punks that take the park for granted. The kids that come there every day, that is their second home. Before meeting to skate, they pick up garbage, and even older guys on weekends bring brooms and sweep up the place.

“It has five-star ratings and in my opinion it is one of the best bowls in our state. There are a few kids that are very concerned and they are there at the park every single day. The skills these kids have attained in 10 years surpass me in my 25 years of doing it.”

Jankowski said the goals of the committee stretch far beyond simple repairs and extend to forming a nonprofit to improve the skate park over the next few years.

“The short-term goal is to raise funds to fix the place up and then continue on to have some upkeep and even get some other stuff like a fence around the park and even forming a nonprofit so we can accept money and use the money,” he said.

“Some ideas we have are a webcam to link to a planned website and new lights. This park has been in a lot of demo videos and tour videos for professional skaters, and we want to make it even better.”
