I just shipped out a board to the next state over. Packing and shipping was $26. UPS Store quoted me $16 to pack and $33 to ship. Next time I buy, obviously I need to keep the box and packing materials. Any other pointers?

Shipping via USPS Priority Mail with a box just a little bigger than the deck, with sufficient bubble wrap and padding on nose/tail has never cost more than $20 for me.
I've shipped well over 100 decks both domestically and internationally this way, and I've never had a deck damaged in shipping, or a complaint from a buyer.

Hope this helps.
David

Quoted there, then shipped USPS.

What bigpapes said.

What did it cost through usps? Was it less than the ups estimate?

Pack the deck flat, collapsing the box down. The smaller dimension will help avoid a possible surcharge due to the size of the box.

It also depends on zones- if the next state over is in a different zone then it will be more. The package size, weight, the zone you ship from, and the zone you are shipping to determine the rates.

You can use the USPS web site shipping calculator and play with the size, weight, and zip codes to see how they affect pricing. It is also cheaper to buy the postage online than to go to the store- just get yourself a scale that does ounce increments up to 10 or 20 pounds. The post office also used to publish the rates in large tables that you could reference yourself.

The most expensive domestic shipping I have seen for me has been from my zip in Atlanta to zip codes in California- based on the difference in zones.

$26.00 including the cost of a box and packing materials sounds about right. Was it a complete or just a deck?

if you are going to be doing this onesy twosy just grab cardboard wherever you can and flat pack as suggested.

If you plan on unloading more over the years hit up uline and grab a couple packs of boxes. wayyyy easier than flat packing and they come flat so they store fine.

pop em out when ready to use
