Hey, all. I used to skate a lot back in the day. I'm old, an early 30-something, but still want to get a new setup to skate with my girl every now and then, especially considering there is a skate park two blocks from my house in the subdivision we just moved into.

Anyway, I wasnt really knowledgeable about what I had back in the day, which was unfortunate, and I mostly had setups that weren't right for me in retrosepct. I'm more aware now, but not in touch with the current scene so I have some questions about gear for a new setup.

To start off, I'm a little dude with not a lot of power. I need an obviously smaller, lightweight deck that manages to be durable (Element, perhaps?). What company would someone recommend and about what size deck? I've never been a big trickster but I can do a few. Same question goes for trucks; something sleek but lightweight? Are risers still a good idea? And has anything changed since the days of abec 7 bearings? Smaller wheels (52 Mm?) still the way to go?

Hope for some advice on a setup and some concrete numbers/measurements to get the most desired results from my setup that compliments me most. And feel free to recommend a place to buy (online, unless anyone here is familiar with the Chicagoland area). Thanks!

SMA Blackbird w/ Ace 55 trucks, Rockets Bearings and Pi wheels.

Indestructible killer deck available in several models shapes and sizes, light awesome fast turning trucks, best bearings on the market and killer fast wheels that slide when you want them to and grip when you need them to.

There are no ABEC 7 bearings. Anybody that markets their 608z(z) skate bearings as anything above ABEC 1 is a fraud and half the one that claim ABEC 1 are a fraud too.

sounds like a potential Powell flight series customer... a bit more expensive, but its longevity will make up for it. I'm currently skating the Caballero flight deck and really like it.

as for the rest, it depends on what terrain you're willing to ride. I noticed most kids on street decks are back in the lower 8-inch widths, vertical terrain asks for a 9' wide deck. use bigger wheels (55-56?) if you're looking for an all-round set-up that will keep the speed well.

oh, and don't call yourself 'old' around here if you're a 30-something kiddie...

early 30's is not old

Lightweight deck - check out Powell Peralta Flight decks.
Being smaller you might want to go with 8.25"

Wheels - Pi or Bones - 52-54 mm

Risers - these are a personal preference

Trucks - Ace all the way. I like to put Bones bushings in mine.
