Where oh where can I get small amounts of hard rock maple veneer. I could only find high minimum suppliers.

Good luck. You can e-mail or call another board builder and beg for some sheets. Most won't. Some might, if they're feeling generous.
GreatLakes Veneers will do a one-time prototype order, but it's for 50 boards(I may have already told you that).
There seems to be lot who are interested in this, hook-up and go in on a shipment.
I might be interested...
