I'd like to take this opportunity to let you all know we've just added a new member to the Concrete Wave team.
Ray Zimmerman of MRZ Photo has been appointed as Concrete Wave's new Associate Photographer.
Ray's work is awe inspiring.Dude is so cool and humble -- and a damn good skater in his own right. Prepare to be amazed. Ray's work will debut in the Buyers Guide.
Here's a shot of Grosso that Ray snapped in December at Montclaire.
WELCOME ABOARD RAY! |

first one: too far away, funky exposure, not sharp and there's a tree growing out of his head.
second one: not enough foreground, poor composition.
third one: too far away, not sharp, too busy, partially blends in with the tree.. |

Mofo fisheye kills... every time. Slightly lower POV would've put CH in the clouds & perfect perspective.
More constructive criticism, please... lord knows we mere mortal photogs can use all the help we can get!
...guess I better get that 15mm barrel after all...
...eb, please point us toward:
a) an interview of the illustrious MOFO
b) tips & tricks for close-up action photography, esp. skateboarding |

That shot is full-frame, and I was still tryig to figure shit out when that was taken. 20mm on an old Canon A1. But you can see the take-off point, no limbs are cut-off, and you can see where he's going. Not all came out that way, but that is what we looked for when we isolated the shots to be considered to print.
Only one MF interview. That was last year.
The advice was limited to, get close, very, very close.
Like 1ft or less. |

Wouldn't have been able to see his face. |

If you've ever seen Mo shoot you'd be shocked that he can still speak quite eliquently and doesn't look a f**ked up -- dude sticks his head right into the line of fire to get the shot, he must have been hit more than a few times.
And that's what I tell budding skate photogs -- if you want the shot, you have to put your camera lense and your head in jeopardy. If you aren't, you're not doing your job right.
Although I suspect that these days, Mo wouldn't want to get in front of this baby... I know I wouldn't!

Phillips and Lester both left their mark, and they weren't exactly riding on toothpicks.
The Phillips one was probably the worse. Rail upside the ear, at speed. |
