I was just talking to someone at the skatepark last week about if skating is dying again. Seems like park traffic is a little lighter these days (for this time of year at my regular pay-to-skate indoor park)
No one saw the severity of this economy coming when this post was first made.  |

i kinda foresaw a plateau in mainstream skateboarding in early 2008. to me, it seemed like there weren't as many newcomers, that the progression wasn't really getting pushed as hard as it had been in years past. on top of that, the whole x-games ditching vert and replacing it with superpark kinda reflects a few more of my reasons: first off, that new pros aren't going vert, and fans aren't finding vert very entertaining; secondly, the new pros we are seeing are doing more technical street tricks; thirdly, the "progression" of skating (in my eyes at least) has moved to such a point where new skaters are discouraged because of the technicality of the tricks. also, tack on the huge market of softgoods, which are by all means the driving force of the skate market; this gives skate companies very little incentive to push the envelope on hardgoods. so, plainly put, they're not gonna push hardgoods. |

...but then again, we're in a golden age for concrete parks being built and it's spawning a lot of tranny skaters--many of which aren't concentrating on hardflips and the like.
Agreed, though. I'm definitely sensing a slowdown. I just keep hoping my local park stays afloat--so far so good. This summer might be rough, though... |

correct me if i'm too young, but weren't there a lot of concrete skateparks in the 70's? |

yes and in reply I would like to say big is a fair bit larger than small, but a lot smaller than infinite.
anyone else dare to say skating is at the crest of the wave again? |

correct me if i'm too young, but weren't there a lot of concrete skateparks in the 70's?

What about this:
How cool is it that those of us who prefer a wider deck, unique shape, bigger wheels and old skool style can get our hands on those things at all!
It's all skateboarding hey ...
There shouldn't be any flak from one corner to another. It's awesome that the older companies are reissuing the decks we've missed, and it's even more awesome that DIY guys like 5 Points, Destructive, Never Again, Big Mess etc are making the kind of things that mean nothing to the popsicle masses, but EVERYTHING to a Skull 'n Boner
