I found this ditch a while ago.
Now, what I was thinking is somehow making a 1-foot tall blockade in front of the below openings to let water go through if it rains a lot, but still keep water from entering during the summer drought:
Also, Along with evaporation and buckets, there's a small "waterfall" at the end that, with the help of gravity, can help take most of the remaining water away:
I'm not sure how I'm gonna do the blockade thing, or if there's any other, safer, easier way to do it. Any suggestions?
Or anything else to help me with my summer project?
Any help or comments are appreciated. |

Wow...that ditch has some major potential, but it looks like it is going to take a major effort to clean up. Keep us posted on how it goes.
On the plus side, you have two flat ramps on either side to drive in a small truck with a plow to move out all the rocks/dirt.

Yeah, that ditch looks fun.
Not sure I have any suggestions for ya as I've never thought about how to drain a ditch with that much water flowing through it.
Keep us posted though.
If you're successful, I'd love to know your techniques.
Good Luck! |

First, that is a lot of water to dam up or divert. I don't know if it's even possible. Where is the water coming from?
Second, if you are going to drain it, you need something big enough and powerful enough to drain it faster than it's coming in. A big trash pump is your best friend.

Third, once you do get the water out, you've got enough shoveling for 20 illegals for a week. Have you checked the surface under the mud? Is it pitted or jacked up in any way?
Fourth, QuickCrete is the only thing I know that to use to dam it up but you gotta get the water flow to stop before any damming goes on.
Things to think about. |

You need to go heavy duty - like a Toyo DP20, designed for dredging sand off the ocean floor. This unit will pump gravel and picks up any solids it can find using a high chrome iron external agitator. You'll also need to build a sump near those pipes and run a large diameter hose to the other end of the ditch. The pump will run you around $30K, and you'll need a crane plus a 3 phase hookup. And you'll also need to sweep all the dirt & gravel into the sump while its running. Keep any small children or animals away from the sump if you ever want to see them again.

You might be able to "lift" one from a local quarry but they're really heavy and hard to keep hidden. I used to sell them ... wish I still did. Easily the world's most badass pump. |
