heres my advice.
make sure the tatt you are getting is something you want, not something that is 'cool' or you saw someone with the ame thing in a bar and thought 'that looks fucking rad'
Like
oakland already siad, an autoclave is a bloody good sign that they are a decent clean shop.
another good idea is speak to the artist first, have a chat with him about your tattoo idea, see how enthusiastic he is about doing it, and see if he has any ideas which you didnt even think of along the same lines.
If its gonna be a decent sized piece, then draw sketches, no matter how rough r good, and write your ideas down.
that way when you go in to speak to them about it, you can explain everything in detail, which might be a pain in the arse to a bad tattoo shop but to a good tattooist and yourself, it will save a lot of time later when the work starts, and you'll both end up with good work.
dont forget that a tattooist relies on other customers by his ability to produce good work.
if you see someone with a god tattoo, ask em who did it.
Lastly, something for you to think about.....
A Tattoo artist friend of mine told me he was 2 mins into doing some work on someone when the person asked him how easy it was to have the tatoos removed afterwards.
he threw him out the shop.
...and this is an award winning tattoo artist with a 10 month waiitng list. go figure!
