City looks to deter skate park intruders

STAMFORD - The city is placing obstacles to thwart skateboarders and inline skaters from breaking into its skate park.
The concrete arena at Scalzi Park, which opened in July, is closed for the winter. But teens are jumping, cutting and digging under the 8-foot fence to get inside. Officials are concerned about liability, Parks Superintendent Mickey Docimo said.
Joseph Barbarotta, the contractor in charge of park maintenance, told the Parks and Recreation Commission last week that he plans to place 55-gallon plastic barrels filled with water in the bottom of the arena, which resembles an empty swimming pool. The hope is that the water will freeze and the containers will be too heavy to move.
Yesterday, Docimo said city workers instead placed five bicycle racks chained together in the arena. Officials feared skaters would tip the barrels of water before they could freeze.
"It's not safe. It's wet. It's icy. There's no supervision," Docimo told the commission.
The city replaced a section of the fence that was cut by vandals a few weeks ago, he said.
Park police have ticketed skateboarders for trespassing, but enforcement is not enough because staffing is scarce in the winter, Docimo said.
The city had a similar problem keeping out skaters and BMX bike riders during the summer when construction was complete but the park was not open. Officials put trash cans, sheets of plywood and sawhorses in the concrete bowl and hired off-duty police officers and park police to patrol it after sprinklers dousing trespassers with water didn't keep them out.
Risk Manager Ann Marie Mones would not allow the park to open until an 8-foot chain-link fence was installed, the arena was insured and a part-time attendant was stationed there.
Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Thomas Lombardo said he is pleased the city is taking steps to prevent injuries at the skate park. It's too dangerous for skaters to use it unsupervised in inclement weather, he said.
"Somebody is going to get hurt in the off-season," Lombardo said.
Commission Vice Chairman Vincent Martino said the skate park has been one headache after another.
The $309,850 taxpayers spent on what he calls "the monstrosity in cement" would have been better spent expanding Terry Conners Ice Rink in Cove Island Park, as the mayor proposed a few years ago, Martino said.
"I think they made a big mistake," he said.

Billy,
The problem is that the kids love Stamford so much that it is way too popular!!
The city can't keep the kids out!!!!!!!!!
That park is always crowded. The best in the North East!!

They are idiots for even trying to keep it shut in the first place.
They built it now let people skate. Skaters should be well aware of the risks of skating in bad conditions, if they choose to risk it that's their problem. |

so they build a skatepark so people have somewhere to skate, then you hand out trespassing tickets for skating in a skatepark, awesome!
and i'm sure that ice skating rink would've brought it tons of people too, who doesn't like ice skating?, morons. |
