i realize this is going to make it sound like i started skating about 6 months ago and it makes me wonder if i did....
anyway, i have some stage 9 129s and 139 that i have run on two boards, as well as some stage 8 149s that i ran on another.
the difference for me, besides the retarded kingpin debacle indy "masterminded", is that my stage 9s seem to stick. they dont return to neutral when my weight goes back to center, or if i bail. the stage 8s do it just fine. i thought it might have been the black paint in my pivot as my 129s area black so i greased the pivot. nope. then i sanded all the paint off the pivot and buffed it. nope. still sticking.
keep in mind i skate my trucks loose as hell. i dont ever run a bottom washer since it takes up too much space. and i turn the nut only so it bites the nylon, basically.
but the fucking stage 9s make me feel like i have no balance since they keep going whatever direction i WAS going.
i also tried running the stage 8 baseplates (w/ grindkiings) w/ my stage 9 hangers (only smaller hangers i have) and they still are doing it. even with the same bushings i was running w/ my stage 8s that were fine.
i am using the softest indy reds and the softest blue powell bushings. same with both sets/
what the fuck is wrong with me? am i a fucking idiot? wait.... lets keep this on topic... what is wrong with my trucks.
i skate some stage 2 151s on another board and they are dreamy, working like a truck ought to. how i grew up skating.
someone have some helpful insight to get me turning naturally again? i wanna throw these fucking things under a bus.
do i just need to find a set of stage 8 139s to solve it. are the stage 9s just fucked?
thanks, really. |

Grimey - Stage 9 is an entirely different beast. It was designed to be adjust by changing bushings more-so than cranking down or losening the nut.
Khiro has a new orange 78a duro bushing that just might be the ticket for you. Beyond that, scour ebay for some old Indys in good shape. |

I had some indy's that were sticking as well and when I compared them to other indy's that didn't stick I noticed the angle of the kingpin wasn't the same and it was pinching the bushings. I ended up having my local shop send them back and Indy replaced them... |

Yeah, I think we're all seeing a lot of this. I know that, as a longtime Indy rider (18 years now?!), I'm particularly frustrated by the Stage 9's. Not that I've switched, by any means....... I just need to do a little work on my trucks before I set 'em up.
I've been having the same exact problem, and it just plain sucks.
From my perspective, the stock bushings are the easiest target, and the easiest problem to fix. I never, ever ride the stock Indy bushings- never, ever, ever, ever! My advice is: Follow suit.
The root problem is that, the double tapered bushings give no centering moment on the trucks. And, if you haven't noticed, the fairly round washers allow the bushings to actually slip around in the washer cups- which totally worsens the problem. So, the bushings and washers all must go.....
If you absolutely MUST keep the stock washers and bushings, wipe them real quick in a little Acetone. That'll wash off the trace oils left over from the manufacturing process, which will help the slipping a little.
The washers should always be aluminum, if you can find them. As aluminum has more resistance than steel does. I use what amounts to Stage 5 stock top and bottom washers, exclusively.
Then, we can discuss bushings. Lots will work. If you choose to keep your stock Indy washers, then, the Powell Hardcores and Khiro metal-insert bushings work great. As I said, I never retain the stock washers. So, Supercush, regular barrel-bottom Khiros, Doh-Dohs... Tensor bushings work particularly well, because they the top and bottoms interlock together... pretty much, any aftermarket bushing is a vast improvement over stock. The stock Stage 9 bushings are also soft as hell, so, I always go harder than stock, even on slutty-loose trucks.
Lastly, there's the issue of the pivot, and pivot bushing. Which you wisely addressed. Now, broken-in Stage 9's feel remarkably better than brand new ones. I can say that with confidence. The reason is, from my perspective, that it looks like the pivot bushing has a much tighter fit than previous stages. So, once the pivot wears out a little, and you get a little slop going in there (ie, it's not ball-fucking-crushingly tight), things quicken up quite a bit. I drop a small drop of bearing lube in the pivots, which stops the sticking a lot. I've also taken an x-acto knife, and cut a bevel into the pivot bushing, which helps even more. Anything that makes that inner diameter bigger and slippery-er works wonders on Stage 9 centering. Try it, you'll like it. But, don't sand down the pivots! That'll just score the aluminum, and cause even more resistance....!
I've contemplated switching brands entirely, except that I am just plain hard-wired against that notion entirely. I grew up on Indys, and I'll more than likely die on Indys..... so, Indy it is.
Hope all this helps. It's a long read, but, only takes about 10 minutes, and maybe 5 bucks at the most, to actually DO. It's worth it. |

after riding indy for 18 years I hadthe same issue. I tried te=he powell bushings and did the 8 baseplate switch. After much mental stress I switched to Krux and they turn like old indys, without any modification. I know I lost some punk points but I am happy with them. |

Powell yellow bushings and no bottom washer does it for me. Another alternative is to slice/split/shave your bushings w/ a razor. Matt Rodriguez talks about setting up his trucks that way in an interview I read (Juice?) He rides his floppy loose-(see I-path promo vid for proof.)

Watch his front truck on the front tailslide down the ditch if you can see it- hard to tell on youtube... |

You being a youngin' and all you might not be aware that early Indy bushings (Stage I & IIstock red softies) were some of the best bushings ever made.
I have every Stage in my quiver, but there is not a one that can out turn and grind an Indy 151 Stage II. They make Stage 9's feel like early Trackers with cement bushings.
'Course, OG Thunders are the shit. Can't go wrong with those (they out-turn and out grind everything) unless you're outbidding me on a set on ebay.
I rode Indy since their inception... it's shame what passes as an Indy today. |

hey,
I lucked out and scored two sets of StageII 151's...
NICE.
How trucks should turn.
Just scored some Stage V 169's from vaskateboards.
(Thanks amigo!!)
Can't wait to slap those on a deck.
Another thing I've noticed; Stage 8 & 9's really seem
to grind down FAST. I know it's not my imagination either.
A few sessions and they look like they spent all summer on
the coping.
Hey Ron, when're we gonna see some killer pool/park/pipe trucks?!
